Artist Statement

My job as a composer, performer and creator of new work is to raise consciousness of the plight of women and is a direct response to the many 20th and 21st century’s challenges we experience around the world. I do this by reviving the lost art of Shirabyoshi to create a new style of music that is "ima-yo" the music of the Heian period. My work superimposes and celebrates the research and practice of female musicians. Now forgotten ancient eras were of women, and I aim to restore the music of these times. It was a woman shaman who invented Wazauta or the "nursery rhyme" for nuns were the first Buddhists in Japan in the Asuka period (6th century).
